Virtual Museum
of cooperatives

Italy has not lagged behind in establishing cooperatives. A few years after the first cooperative models were founded in the major European countries, in the middle of the 19th century, they made their appearance in our country.
There followed a period of development from the end of the 19th century to the first 20 years of the 20th century. There was a slowing down, but not a disappearance of activity during the Fascist period and a tumultuous revival after World War II. The ability of the Italian cooperative movement to consolidate itself during the years of international instability at the end of the 20th century was surprising, gaining, in some areas, a substantial market share and at times, even a leadership position.
This room contains a general profile of the history of the Italian cooperative movement as well as brief biographies of its main leaders (biographies), listed in alphabetical order.
